Summer Leaders Retreat: Knowledge
Posted by COM Blogger in Resources, Retreats on April 27, 2010
Ken Currie opened our time at the Summer Leaders Retreat with a talk on knowledge. We need to understand intellectually the truth the underlies any experience we may have in life. He also talked about the interconnectedness of knowing God, knowing self, and knowing the world

To end the conference, Ken Currie challenged us with the parable of the sower that Jesus told in Matthew 13:1-9. He described the different types of soil and gave a challenge to each type of person (or soil).
BULL/COW 11/18/09 Community
Posted by COM Blogger in Resources on November 19, 2009
Ken Currie came and spoke at our joint Bethel and Northwestern meeting on November 18. He spoke about community.
Community is not arbitrary
Community is the context for Christianity
Community is a natural and normal result of knowing Christ
He then mentioned tons of verses from the Bible about what our community should look like. Verses about community in the Bible do two things:
1. They show us standards for what our community should look like
2. They show us how much we need Jesus
He finished by encouraging us to have mentors, peers, and those we are seeking to influence as part of our community wherever we are.
Running the Race, Fighting the Good Fight, and Keeping the Faith This Fall
Posted by Ken Currie in Ministry Update on September 29, 2009
As the Apostle Paul recounts his life to his disciple Timothy, he uses distinct imagery. He says that he has “finished the race”, “fought the good fight”, and “kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). There is an important principle here for all Christians, churches, and ministries. We must put a premium on finishing well. Many have started well but finished poorly. This is a sad reality. It can happen on an individual or corporate level.
We are now beginning our seventh year of ministry with Campus Outreach Minneapolis. God has been good to us. We have seen steady growth across the board since our inception. Even though we are not an established, aged organization, we could easily begin to lose the urgency that brought us into being. That urgency is the fact that the world needs the gospel of Jesus Christ more than anything else, and the college campus is a key place to spread that gospel. Our greatest challenge now is not to survive or to get established, but to fight the temptation to coast; to rest on our laurels.
Coasting as a Christian or a Christian ministry is a strong temptation. Paul specifically addresses this idea when he communicates dismay at some of the Galatian believers. He says, “You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?” Paul’s specific concern is abandoning the gospel of grace, but the principle applies to us in many ways. We want the gospel to free us from any temptation to coast as we minister this year. Here are some ideas that will help resist the urge to coast:
1) Don’t pine away for the ‘old’ dines; the first part of a race is the easy part. My wife and I ran the Twin Cities Marathon in 2004. The starting line is like a big party. The runners are energetic and excited. The finish line is quite different. Most cross the line with dogged looks of determination on their face. Sometimes following Christ is hard in a moment. Faithfulness to a biblical vision can be unpopular with some or economically challenging but sometimes this is the path to which God has called his children. While I think with fondness of our first few years on campus in the Twin Cities, we know that there is much more to be done.
2) Run/Fight everyday well – we don’t know when the finish is! Jesus is coming back in all of his glory. He will establish his rule of perfect peace. However, we don’t know when that is so we are to run/fight with the simple knowledge that the finish line is ahead of us.
3) Deeply embrace the reality that we are called to run/fight AND that any fruitfulness or faithfulness here is wholly because of God’s grace.
Thank you for your partnership in this ministry. We feel a deep responsibility to continue to steward the donations that are given to Campus Outreach Minneapolis. Please join us in prayer that we may run after, fight for, and keep the vision that God has given us.
Suffering Well
Posted by sitcintern in SITC on July 31, 2009
Last night some of the beach project people arrived home and joined us to hear Ken Currie speak. The topic was how to suffer well taken from 1 Peter 4:1-11. He gave us 7 ways to help us suffer well, here are three of them.
First, we are to remember that Christ suffered well for us. Read over 1 Peter 3:18 to remind you of the gospel truth that Jesus chose to suffer in the flesh. He has suffered like us.
Another truth is the way we live now is only temporary. Hold on to that reality the next time you find yourself hurting. We have eternity to look forward too, so don’t dwell, but trust in God’s grace.
One more thing that Ken talked about was not letting your pain slow you down. Ask the Lord to use the situation you are in to help you grow.
Suffering happens in this world so let us learn how to deal with it in a healthy way, 1 Peter reminds us of these truths.
Also, Jared mentioned when you are endure hardship in your life…“think about God’s promises more and your circumstances less”
Living Stone
Posted by sitcintern in SITC on June 19, 2009
Last night, Ken Currie spoke to us about 1 Peter 2:1-12. As an intro to the discussion Ken gave us an important lesson on the difference between “Justification” and “Sanctification”. When reading scripture we can ask ourselves which one is the author speaking of. Scripture will take on a new meaning when we look through this lens.
1 Peter 2:9 is an example of justification which says “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” God has declared these things of us.
The verses we read last night spoke of the “Living Stone”. The stone Peter is referring to, is us. God dwell in us, we are a holy temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). Furthermore, in order to build a firm temple you need a cornerstone. Just as masonry workers guide every measurement from one “corner”…everything in our lives stems from one cornerstone…Jesus! Apart from him we are nothing.

We have called our meeting for older students at Northwestern and Bethel, BULL (Building Up Leaders and Laborers). We are continuing our series on What is a Christian? On Wednesday (10/10), Ken Currie spoke about Christians being “inclusivists”. Because God is an inclusive God, we, as Christians, should seek to include those around us. To hear his talk click here
