The weeks are flying by…
Tonight we’re joining with CO Greenville to have a dance social! The theme is: “WHEN I GROW UP…”
This week has had a prayer theme. The students focused on this topic by hearing Jamie Lecheler teach on it Monday night and participated in both sunrise prayer and a candlelit prayer service on Wednesday. In between those prayer times we had our regular weekly Leaders Training, Leader Dgroups, and Evangelism Training. For Evangelism this week, Dylan taught about mercy ministry and emphasized how rich and elite we are as Americans — college students make up only about 1% of the world! After speaking about giving generously to the poor and spreading the Gospel to those in both physical and spiritual poverty, we had the privilege of sending our friend Gladwin home to India. Gladwin joined us this summer for the first half of Beach Project by serving on the “A-Team” made up of older disciples who serve our project in huge ways. One of Gladwin’s primary services to our Project was educating us about the Indian culture and how different it is to do ministry without the wealth of resources and community we are blessed with in Campus Outreach. To honor his fellowship with us and to extend our vision to the nations, we sent Gladwin home with a backpack full of resources to use as he goes back to minister on his campus in Allahabad, India, where our CCP ministered and met him last summer. He will be meeting up with our CCP this summer in Delhi, near his home, whenever he gets a chance! He will be in our prayers and if you would like to intercede with us for Gladwin, he would be grateful for your prayers in favor of his trust and rest in the Gospel as he brings the vision of “life on life” discipleship back to his campus.

Staff leave and CCP visit…
We are midway though the summer and the dynamics have changed in the past week as the staff rolled out and the Cross Cultural Project students arrived on Project. The CCP team stayed here for ten days to serve the project and train for their trip which begins in 2 days!! While they are here we emphasized the topic of missions in God’s will. The past few weeks, the themes have been relationships and sanctification. Students are being challenged with these controversial topics and learning to look through a Gospel lens as they view all areas of life.
Students were excited to send off the CCP team with their prayers and support and will continue to share in the vision of building laborers for the lost world.

Time in the Word
One of the big parts about beach project is studying the Bible with other people. Every morning you can come on the project grounds and see students studying the Bible together. The beach project is a great place for students to learn how to study the Bible and how to read it through the lens of the gospel.

First full week
We have officially made it through the first full week of SBP ’08!
Ken Currie spoke during “theme” training on Monday night before the Currie family left to go back to Minnesota on Wednesday morning. He taught on the Bible’s counter-cultural view of God in contrast to the upside-down versions people create to satisfy human motives. Bible study training on Tuesday night was led by Matt Reagan who reminded everyone that their mental “lenses” are polluted with biases and the Word of God stands perfect in itself and should be approached without previous assumptions or personal motives.
On Wednesday morning, leaders continued their training and that afternoon, everyone reconvened for Eric Lonergan’s evangelism training session after which everyone on project paired up and went out on the beach to use the tools they had learned and share their faith.
Thursday night room leaders led their discipleship groups (D-groups) through accountability and heart checks, some time in the Word (studying the book of James), and “10 Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health” by Donald Whitney, which is the book designated for the summer.
On Friday night we had a beach social… sandcastles, relay races, sunset, and ships across the ocean; then back to project for root beer floats and pool games. Saturday night most of the room groups went out on group dates. Different dates included activities like crabbing, a concert in the park, ice cream, miniature golf, and what seems to be the project favorite – pool basketball!
The groups split up for Sunday church after Colby Williamson taught a life training session about “money management to the glory of God.” Sunday is a free day with an optional worship time and “theology time with Okey,” the pastor from Pine Drive church, in the evening; but students are encouraged to recognize Sunday as a Sabbath and rest for the week ahead!

in the beginning…

In the very early morning of Sunday the twenty-fifth of May, Campus Outreach staff and student leaders gathered to depart for the journey which would them to their summer destination. Two days, nine states, and nearly 1,400 miles later, the leaders arrived at the Ocean View Retreat Center in the heart of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a few days of training and preparation before the arrival of the sixty-two first-year students.
After a day of greeting and registering the disciples, the first rally was held. Student Project Directors James Lecheler and Karyn Tomlinson welcomed the group and Project Director Paul Poteat introduced the summer’s theme: Upside-Down.
The first weekend of Beach Project was a whirlwind of activity and fellowship as everyone settled in. The job hunt began right away on Friday morning and, as of today, all 96 students have secured their jobs! Friday night, each room group enjoyed their first meal together as a “discipleship group” and shared their testimonies with each other. The rest of the weekend provided some free time for visiting the beach, hanging out around Project, and attending final orientation before the regular schedule of Project began.
Saturday night was the first Project social. The group played miniature “Safari Golf” and dressed up in costume as tourists “on safari” and an array of Serengeti wildlife. The room groups competed for the coveted prize (a beach towel) and polished off the evening with ice cream treats.
On Sunday, the entire group attended Pine Drive Gospel Church where the men and women separated for Life Training. During the worship service, Ken Currie preached a message on growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Some of the Beach Project will be attending this church regularly, and the rest will go to Trinity Episcopal Church, where the Project has been invited to hold some of its weekly training meetings.
Beginning this week, the Beach Project will take on its infamously structured form and the routine will continue throughout the duration of the summer as job schedules, training, and discipleship get underway.
